Universal Infant Free School Meals

From September 2014, free school meals through the Government's 'Universal Infant Free School Meals' initiative, will be available for all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 across the country.

This idea is to encourage children to eat school meals while making positive improvements to health, attainment and socialisation, and of course, helping families with the cost of living. These are three of the 16 actions in the School Food Plan (below), which aims to transform what children eat in schools and how they learn about food.

We would encourage parents to register for Free School Meals even though there is an automatic entitlement for Key Stage 1 children. Registering now has 2 major benefits :

  • Your child's entitlement will be continued throughout their time at school subject to your continued eligibility.
  • The school can continue to receive pupil premium funding, currently worth £1300 a year per child, throughout a child's Key Stage 1 education. If you are eligible and don't register, that funding could be lost until such time that you make an application at a later date.
